Fire Ants

They look so harmless but beware!

The first time I camped in the Kalahari, I looked for a shady tree who could also protect me from rain and pitched my tent underneath. Big mistake: When fire ants heard me snoring, they crawled out from the tree, conquered my sleeping body and began to feast. „Idiot“, said the expert Ernst Schleipfer from South Africa. „Nobody sleeps under a tree without drumming against its trunk beforehand. Does it sound hollow, you can be sure of fire ants waiting for you inside. Only a solid sounding tree is safe.“ Thank you, Erich, I’ll tell it to all the other idiots planning to pitch a tent in the wilderness …
