Even on the Scorecard there hops a boomer ...

One morning I was standing on the first tee of the Anglesea Golf Club on the southeast Australian coast, not far from Melbourne, and tried to nail down my ball the hole, a 420 m long Par 5. But I couln’t! There were only sparce bits of greens, the rest was occupied by at least 100 kangaroos. Sleeping in the grass, standing and grazing, hopping around and watching me. Where should I play without killing a „roo“, as the Australien say? „The trouble is“, my golfpartner Mike told me, that these animal can’t move backwards.“ Really? „No, they are the only animal who can’t do that.“ I never thought about it. „Neither the boomer, nor the joeys“, said Mike. What’s that? He explained: In the land of the kangaroos, boomers are the grown up males and joeys the teenies. But why can’t they move backwards? „Because their enormous tail prevents it. No other animal has such a blockade in the rear“, said Mike. I understood. Then we hit our balls right trough the boomers, the joeys and all the other. We both hit some animals but they weren’t impressed. Didn’t even blink. „Do they take revange when we recober our balls?“„Sometimes“, said Mike and marched on. But nothing happened. 12 of the 18 holes were full of kangaroos. They were so many that we had to declare our scores void …
