I got an email the other day from my admired friend Andreas Bender, the last „Master of the Art of Travel“. I want to share his message with you and strongly advice all, to use the information, the next time you are in Rio de Janeiro: „I have never before travelled from Burma straight to Rio, but last week I did. But I have been frequently there in the last 37 years and always settled down in my preferred waterhole in Ipanema, spending the entire night listening to Samba music. ‚Garota de Ipanema‘ (The Girl of Ipanema) is the place, the legendary pub/restaurant which has not changed since I first came to Rio – this ‚Cidade Maravilhosa‘ – in 1974. Well, the famous chop that once cost 1 Cruzeiro (20 Euro Cents or 30 Us-Cents) is now 4,70 Reales (2 Euros or 2.50 $). The wonderful Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim (1927-1994), Brazil’s most well known songwriter, arranger, singer, pianist, guitarist and the creator of the Bossa Nova, composer of „Garota de Ipanema“– he founded the pub by the same name along with his closest friend Vinicius de Moraes (look at the street sign in the photo), composer, poet and diplomat. Brazil honoured Jobim in many ways, even Rio de Janeiro’s Airport carries his name: Tom Jobim.“ And I tell you: There is no better place to enjoy the most beautiful city on earth than the „Garota de Ipanema“ …
