Gay Stamps

The bloc of the three Finnish stamps ...

Gay Stamps

... and the stamp honoring Harvey Milk

Wow! A man who invented the „Blue Oyster“-look of homosexual pop groups like „YMCA“ and ispired photographers like Robert Maplethorpe is honored with 3 stamps by an official postal authority. He is gay artist Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991) who called himself Tom of Finland since he was born in this Scandinavian country. The stamps are explicit homosexual and erotic and Dean Shepherd of the „Gibbon Stamp Magazine“ remarked: „Such a thing was never done before!“ But why not? Because the uproar which followed the issue of Goya’s „Nude Maja“ by the Spanish Postal Authority in the early 1930s is well recorded. And Homo-Erotic was, a few years ago only, not even shown in public exibitions of works of art. A bold move by the Suomi Post! Within its puritan limits the US Postal Service did a similar thing: It presented Harvey Milk, the first official in the States who declared openly to be gay, with a stamp. It’s a decent portrait, but the bloc shows the rainbow flag. Now I beg my readers not to make any cheap jokes about the way stamps are fixed to envelopes …
