I dare to say, that the world as we love it, wouldn’t exist without the mighty river. Yes, we all know the myriads of stories, existing from the tiny source in the Andes down to the enormous delta in which the island Marajo lies, as big as Switzerland, the biggest in Brazil. And there are more islands, splitting the Amazonas into channels, flowing to the Atlantic ocean. Per second stream 160 000 cubic meter or 42 267 528 US gallons into the sea. That’s four times what the Congo transports and ten times the quantity of the Mississippi. It’s one seventh of all the sweet water rivers transport into the oceans. Can you image? Of course not. Nobody can. But without the Amazonas life would slowly die in the sea and the shores would get a crusty rim of solid salt. Now you know why I love this river, in addition to its beauty …
