Mercury Island

That‘s Great Mercury Island from my Diary ...

Mercury Island

... and from the air ...

Michael Fay is/was the richest man of New Zealand. So it was to be expected that he knew how to finance a life in splendour. When I rounded the Northern Island (I can’t remember why), I suddenly saw Great Mercury Island – and I knew that my phantasy had arrived, and I knew also that I myself could never arrive. Because Fay owned the island, went there for long weekends and could never be convinced to sell. I wrote in my diary, when I passed: „Paradise discovered! That’s how stupid me always imagined a South Sea island to be. Wooded mountains, a hut on a circular lagoon with azur-blue water and white sandy beach, protected from all evil, a singular huge tree for shade, a sweet water creek, even a tiny airstrip running up a hill. Green, fertile, grow your own vegetables and fruits, ship your library over, come to peace and life.“ Ome can rent Great Mercury Island, it costs ca. 130 000 Euro or 170 000 $ per week. Or was it per day? Whatever – it’s worth it, it’s the spot on earth, where wars, disasters and bad news reach you never or in 100 years …
