BARS Moments You Never Forget … (No. 34)

Canal Street

Is this really New York? Yes, the beginning of Canal Street ...

No, it wasn’t posh. It was a working men’s joint. A very simple bar. Not a single piece was upholstered, you sat on wooden benches alongside wooden tables and the waiters became stone-faced when you asked for a glass with your beer. You drank from the bottle. Fast and for 3.50 $ (the waiters urged you to order beer every five minutes). There was a runway through „Diamond Lil“, narrow and as high as a grown man’s nipples. That was important. So you sat on the benches or near the runway on bar stools (higher) and a never endling procession of naked women appeared from nowhere. Is anybody out there who can remember that? The naked woman of all ages (18 to 60) and races (snowwhite to tarblack) had their clothes bundled in their arms, let them fall to the ground by reaching their position on the runway and startet to dance. Totally naked. And then they began to dress. Slowly. And fully clothed after three to five minutes, the wandered off the stage and the next lot of naked women marched out. The delight of „Diamond Lil“ was this reversed striptease. Touching was not forbidden but regarded bad behaviour. The stars of the naked prostrated on the runway and let their tits hang over the edge like bells in the church tower. Then they wriggeled them. Or lucky guest swang them by hand. Yes, this was „Diamond Lil“, for years a highlight of New York. It’s closed now. I’m very sorry. P. S.: I couldn’t find a single photo of „Diamond Lil“ …
