... and the new „tree“!

Old Sahara hands, remember the „Arbre du Tenere“? The only tree ever mentioned and shown on a Michelin map? Even on one with a 1:1 000 000 scale? It was so important that the arbre stood there in the wilderness of the desert, the only one in a region the size of France, marking the most important crossroad for the travellers. When you saw it, you knew that Niamey, the capital of Niger, was near. And then, one day, a drunken driver waltzed it down with his truck. The remains of the tree are preserved in the Nationalmuseum of Niger, they have their own pavillion. In the desert, where the arbre once stood, they errected a monument tree, a sculpture made of all the scrapeyard iron one can find between Niamey and Algiers. You can still find the old Michelin maps with the „Arbe du Tenere“ …
