Naturally, you say, it is the Grand Canyon in the United States: 1 mile or 1,6 km deep. No, say the Peruvians, our Colca Gorge is 3,2 km or 2 miles deep, measured from the highest summit to the deepest bottom. Uuhh, disagree some geologists: Summit to bottom ist not correct, it should be measured from gorge’s edge to bottom, then you got 1,2 km or 0,7 miles only. Stop the discussion, we hear from Nepal. There ist the Gali Kandaki Valley, on the way to the Annapurna, with 8091 m or 26 545 feet the tenth highest mountain. It is, recently calculated, 2000 m (2200 yard) deeper than the Colca and 4000 m (4400 yard) deeper than the Grand Canyon. Be it as it is, the Grand Canyon remains a wonder and a big surprise since it is not a valley in the Andes or the Himalayans but a deep hole in almost flat ground …
