WELL, YES, WE MARVEL ABOUT THE METRO IN MOSCOW. This vast system, filled with kitshy decorations and Stalinist examples of „Peoples Art“, executed by poor prisoners of war and terror. But for decades we forgot, that the „Tube“ in New York was filled with the most amazing manifestations of artists talent – voluntarily! Either by order of the city legislators or illegally applied in the security of the darkness. Without much difference – the quality is the same and very high. Most of the works of art in the depth of the subway system are murals of different kinds. But you’ll find great mosaics also, this lost art of the 20th century. The closer you look, the more appear even big sculptures out of the shades of the traffic channels. Often you overlook some of the best examples because the artist, afraid of vandalism and theft, had them stashes away in dark corners or under the staircases. There must be thousands of works of art along the over 700 miles of track and in the 468 stations, a genuine gallery, the largest on earth – but you need an expert to guide you. But there are „NYC Underground Art Tours“, offering a daily programme on three lines: Uptown & the Bronx, Downtown & Brooklyn and Grand Central & Queens. The name: „Apple Subway Tours“ (@applesubway.com) seems to be the best company. They start on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday at 10 or 11 a. m. and 2 p. m. The charge its US$ 45 plus the Subway Fare Card for US$ 5.50. The Time you need: app. 2  1/2 hours. Oh, and you might leave the tour at the point you wanted to reach anyway, so your ticket is not lost …
