Eau de Cologne

100 years old – and still smelling great ...

IF YOU HAD TOLD ME, that I should sprinkle my precious body with a 100 years old Eau de Cologne, I would have declared you insane! Yesterday I did it – and it was one of the best discoveries – cosmetic-wise – of my life. The whole story started with a book of the German author Otto Julius Bierbaum, in which he mentioned, during a very early motorcar drive through Italy (in 1902!), „the fabulous ‚Acqua di Felsina‘, created by a nobleman in Bologna, one Pietro Bortolotti.“ Who called himself, in a remarkable lack of vanity, „inventore“. What a shame, I thought, this Eau de Cologne will definitely not be produced anymore, and if, some cosmetic giant will have bought the nobleman out and filled a modern scent into the bottles, smelling like – well, like what they all do. But I took a desperate move, scanned the Internet and found, in Rome, a keeper of the good old things, a bailee of luxuries, who still got some original bottles of the wonderful „Acqua di Felsina“! Would you believe it? I ordered a bottle in its original wrapping, still boasting as coming from an „Imperiale e Reale Profumeria“at Piazza Galvani Lett 4 M. I opened it carefully, got the first drops out – and the bathroom filled with the aromatic character of the best of Italy! The Eau de Cologne was fresh like 100 years ago, when it was just produced, a great and very male perfume, dry and a mix of flowers and herbs. I immediately ordered another bottle for 39 Euro or ca. US$ 45, which is not more expensive than any modern, so-called designer Eau. Thanks, Herr Bierbaum, for the hint, and thanks, you Roman bailee! And thanks, of course, Pietro Bortolotti, the creator of „Acqua di Felsina“ …
