… and Garraza with Beuys

NO, HE ISN’T YOUNG ANYMORE and the specialist know him already, this Basque painter with the strange name KEPA GARRAZA MAYO. He was a buddy of the world-famous German artist Joseph Beuys, and in Bilbao, Garraza’s hometown, they celebrate him regularly, even in the local Guggenheim Museum. But he ought to be world famous too, because of his perfect handicraft, his spectacular and grotesque subjects and the consequence with which he follows the path of his talent. Well, price-wise Garraza has reached a high six-figures status, and the reason why museums love him more than collectors (the ones with the big money) is the reluctance to hang his painting in a living or dining room – these odd and cruel scenes of world history (often with a lot of blood splashing) or the pictures of a (maybe) wishful but too often unreasonable future. Whatever – Garraza paints plain statements and that’s a risk in the top class of the art market. I suggest that whenever you see a Garraza Vernissage announced or a affordable Garraza coffee-table book published, go there or buy it. His work is real Manna for the eyes and the brain …
