Michelangelo with the battered face ...

It adds enormously to the importance of a painter when two collegues get into a bloody brawl, discussing this painter! This is what happened arund the year 1500 when Pietro Torrigiano (1472-1528) broke the nasal bone of Michelangelo (1475-1564) and left him with an battered face for the rest of his very long life. The painter over whom they got into this fight was Masaccio (1401-1428), long dead before both were born. And today we adore Michelangelo, we treasure Masaccio – and nobody can name a work of Torrigiano. He got famous only for breaking the nose of a genius (who deleted the crushed bone from his famous selfportrait on the left but still looks rugged) …
