Copan in Sao Paulo

The skysraper with its own postal code ...

At first I didn’t belief that a house can have a postal code. The „Copan“ in Sao Paulo (Brazil) has one: CEP 01046-925. Amazing! It’s a 140 m (or 420 feet) high, 38 story residential building. Construction was completed in 1966 and it has the largest floor area of any residential building in the world, designed by the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer, being responsible for the famous sinuous facade. In its final version, the building has 1160 apartments and 5000 residents, that’s why the City Hall granted the postal code. Over 100 janitors conduct maintenance. The ground floor is home to 70 businesses, a church and four restaurants. The skyscraper has inspired writers, filmmakers, photographers, and artists from all over the world. The book „Stories from the Copan Building“ by Regina Rheda was published in 1994 and won the 1995 Jabuti Prize in Brazil (available in English). Now the question remains: Would one like to live in the „Copan“? Well, the problem is, I never met a person who wants to live in Sao Paulo …
